Volunteer Code of Conduct
Last updated December 2024
The following guidelines outline expectations to ensure everyone’s safety, well-being, and growth:
Make climbing fun, enjoyable, and ensure that participants are safe, happy, and comfortable at all times.
Provide enthusiastic and constructive feedback rather than negative criticism.
Complete a DBS check and safeguarding training before volunteering with BIC.
Follow our safeguarding policy and procedures, and report any concerns or allegations of abuse or poor practice to our designated safeguarding officer, Jessica Carter.
Avoid taking photos or videos of participants on personal devices.
Do not engage with participants on social media or communicate with them outside of sessions.
Keep children and vulnerable adults safe by supervising effectively, ensuring equipment is fit for purpose, using safe methods and techniques, and prioritising participants' safety at all times. If you have any concerns, report them to the BIC team and the climbing centre.
Treat all children and vulnerable adults equally, with respect and dignity. Volunteers are encouraged to participate in disability awareness training.
Maintain a safe and appropriate distance from participants. If manual or physical support is required, provide it openly, with sensitivity, and only after consulting participants and obtaining their consent.
Work in an open environment by avoiding private or unobserved situations and encouraging open communication without secrets.
Build balanced relationships based on mutual trust, empowering children and vulnerable adults to participate in decision-making.
Develop positive relationships with parents and carers by keeping them informed about participants’ development.
Be an excellent role model by demonstrating positive behaviour and using appropriate language and conversation.
Address and challenge any instances of poor, negative, aggressive, or bullying behaviour among participants.
Wear your BIC uniform during sessions whenever possible.
